The sound and constant vibration of Kai's purring lulled me to sleep. When I awoke alone in his bed, I hadn’t felt so relaxed in years.

I stretched my limbs and sat up. I glanced around his room which was neat. Against one wall to the left stood a free-standing closet, a table and chair across from the bed, with an open laptop on the table. Beside the table was a two-seater couch. The room was small but cozy.

I fished for a clean shirt from his free-standing closet and pulled it on; I breathed in the material and smiled, it smelled like him.

Slowly, I opened the door to a man walking toward the bathroom with nothing on besides the towel over his shoulder.

He stopped, glanced over his shoulder and smiled. “Welcome, darling. If you’re looking for Kai, he is that way.” The man pointed in the opposite direction.

“Thank you.”

“My name is Jude.” He turned and proffered his hand.

He was tall with a swimmer’s build, blue eyes, blond hair and boyish good looks. When he’d turned around, I caught sight of the front of him and glanced up nervously.

He chuckled. “Right, don’t be shy. You’ll see a lot of this around here if you intend on staying.” Jude pointed to his middle, then wrapped his towel around his lower half.

I turned to him, cheeks heated, and shook his hand. Before pulling my hand free, he brought my hand to his mouth and kissed my knuckles. It seemed shifters had manners, Kai did that as well.

“How very charming,” he drawled, turned on his heels and headed toward the bathroom.

“Yeah, sorry about that. Unfortunately, Jude doesn’t have any tact,” Kai said as he ran toward me with a bright face and smiling green eyes.

“Don’t worry about it. I guess I just have to get used to it.”

My words seemed to bring a low rumbling purr from Kai, and I wrapped my arms around his waist, pressing my ear against his chest.

“I like you in my shirt, by the way,” he said, taking my hand and leading me down the corridor. “Let me show you around.”

We walked to the end of a long corridor. Kai opened a door to another larger room filled with items.

My jaw slackened as we entered the vast room. “Wow!”

“Yeah, tell me about it. It’s why there are four of us here. We watch over the Master Vampire of Sterling Meadow’s most priceless artifacts.”

“Léon?”

“Yes, Léon.”

“How long have you worked for him?”

“Since I got here; so many years ago, I don’t remember the exact date. So far, he’s been very generous and pleasant to work for, but I’ve seen what he can do if you cross him. People mistake his kindness for weakness and end up gone. If you understand my meaning?”

I nodded. “This must’ve taken him years to collect.” I ran my fingers across a sarcophagus. “But then again, he’s been around for centuries.” I might not know much about shifters, but I knew enough about the vampires in this town.

“Yep. Back there are items he keeps in a safe and locks the entire room.
